MRI

MRI/MRA
  1. It is recommended that wearing of jewelry and hair pins/apparel be kept at a minimum.
  2. Patients with pacemakers, inner ear implants, and certain other medical devices cannot be examined.

MRI Abdomen (Patient requiring sedation)
  1. MRI abdomen exams involving a pancreatic protocol, including MRCP, have preferred dietary prep of nothing to eat or drink 3 hours prior to exam.
  2. For IV Sedation - Nothing to eat six (6) hours prior to exam. Clear liquids are permitted up until two (2) hours prior to exam. Must be accompanied by a licensed responsible adult driver for return home. (Taxi driver does not qualify.)

MRI Prostate

  1. Liquid diet only after 6pm night before exam
  2. Use one Fleets enema at bedtime
  3. Use second Fleets enema two (2) hours prior to the arrival time
  4. NPO six (6) hours prior to appointment


Barium Enema

Day Before the Exam
  1. Drink a clear liquid lunch and dinner (broth, fruit juice without pulp, skim milk, coffee or tea).
  2. Beginning at 6:00 p.m. drink at least 8 ounces of clear liquid (water) every hour until bedtime.
  3. At 8:00 p.m. drink the bottle of Magnesium Citrate (10 oz.).
  4. At 10:00 p.m. take four (4) Dulcolax tablets with a full glass of water.
  5. Nothing to eat or drink after midnight.

Note: You are taking laxative products. Please plan your day accordingly before and after your exam.

IVP (Intravenous Pyelogram)

Day Before the Exam
  1. Take four (4) Dulcolax tablets at 6:00 p.m. Drink plenty of fluids.
  2. Do not eat or drink anything after midnight.

Dulcolax is a laxative. Please plan your evening accordingly.

Ultrasound

Pelvic

60 minutes prior to your exam, begin drinking 32 ounces of water. Be sure all 32 ounces are consumed 45 minutes prior to your scheduled exam time (for example, if your appointment time is 10:00 a.m. begin drinking 32 ounces at 9:00 a.m., and finish by 9:15 a.m.). Please do not empty your bladder.


Abdominal (Liver, Gallbladder, Aorta, Renal)

Please do not have anything to eat or drink 4 hours prior to your exam.


Mammography

No deodorant, perfumes or talcum powder. If possible, wear a blouse with pants or a skirt as complete undressing is not necessary. Please bring all previous mammogram films if the prior exam was performed at a facility other than South Texas Radiology Imaging Centers.


PET/CT

PLEASE NOTE: If the instructions are not followed closely, the exam may need to be rescheduled. Contact your doctor or our Central Scheduling department if you have any questions about this prep or your exam.

  1. No food or drink except water (16-24 oz. of water is encouraged) prior to the injection.
  2. No strenuous exercise 24-48 hours prior to the exam.
  3. No sugar or sugar substitutes prior to the exam.
  4. No vitamins, supplements, steroids and/or medications that require food in the morning of your exam. You may take these after your exam is complete. Medications; other than vitamins, supplements and steroids, requiring only water may be taken any time.
  5. Please bring previous related studies.
  6. The last meal you consume prior to coming in for your PET/CT exam needs to be a high protein meal (meat, chicken, fish, eggs and green vegetables), no carbohydrates or sugars (bread, fried foods, sauces or salad dressings, fruits, juices, or alcohol) with the meal. Water is acceptable.

Diabetic Patient Prep – AM exam only
  1. Nothing to eat or drink after midnight.
  2. Take Glucophage or other pills in the morning with water only, then nothing to eat or drink except for water.

Insulin Dependent Patient
  1. Take insulin in AM with food or water six (6) hours prior to your exam.

Note: Diabetic Patients ONLY

CT Scan - Abdomen/Pelvis Prep

Please arrive at the facility 15-30 minutes prior to the appointment time. No dietary or oral contrast (barium) prep is required for a CT abdomen/pelvis.

Exceptions:
  • Exams involving a pancreatic protocol have a dietary prep of nothing to eat or drink 3 hours prior to the exam.
  • Patients with a history of weight control surgery (e.g., gastric bypass, gastrectomy) will be provided a Gastrografin mixture upon arrival at the site.

CT Virtual Colonoscopy Prep

Note: If you are having a Virtual Colonoscopy the same day as or immediately after an incomplete Optical Colonoscopy, do not use this prep. Call our scheduling department and come directly to one of our facilities.

Day Before the Exam
  1. Please remain on a clear liquid diet.
  2. Chill bottle of Gastrografin in the refrigerator as soon as you get it. This makes it more palatable.

Your prep package will include 2 Dulcolax tablets, 2 bottles of Magnesium Citrate and 1 Bottle of Readi-Cat barium.


Time Instructions
12:00 (Noon) Take two (2) Dulcolax tablets.
3:00 p.m. Drink one (1) bottle of Magnesium Citrate mixed with 8 ounces of clear juice or clear carbonated drink (example: Sprite). Follow this with 4 to 8 cups of water during the afternoon.
6:00 p.m. Drink the entire bottle of Readi-Cat2 flavored smoothie. Continue to drink the water as directed in the 3:00 p.m. instruction.
6:30 p.m. Drink the 2nd bottle of Magnesium Citrate using the above 3:00 p.m. instructions.
9:00 p.m. Drink chilled bottle of Gastrografin mixed with Sprite or clear juice.
Day of Exam You may drink water or clear liquids until your exam. Please call with any questions.

Important: You are taking bowel cleansing laxative products; please plan your day accordingly.

CT Enterography & MRI Enterography

  1. Nothing to eat or drink after midnight.
  2. For CT–please arrive at facility 60 minutes before scheduled exam time.
  3. For MRI–please arrive at facility 60 minutes (1 hour) before scheduled exam time.
  4. Oral contrast (Volumen) will be given upon arrival.

*Readi-Cat barium is not used as a prep for CT Enterography.
